Shag wants someone in rugby to speak up

Steve Hansen hopes discussions at next month’s Shape of the Game summit will help improve rugby for everyone rather than prove a “waste of time”.

The former All Blacks coach has questioned the value of previous meetings involving leading coaches and referees, insisting there must be a clear purpose if World Rugby is to address the problems facing the sport.

Hansen, who has attended similar gatherings during his time in charge of New Zealand, believes too many dialogues have ended without meaningful change because those involved have been reluctant to speak openly.

HENRY: Love was ill-prepared for Bok intensity

“Before I’ve brought anything to the table, I would want reassurance,” he shared on the latest episode of the Rugby Unity podcast.

“I’ve been to those meetings and they’re a waste of time. People sit there and don’t say anything, and I used to get frustrated, say things and piss people off because you’re saying them.”

The 67-year-old said the November convention in London should focus on finding practical ways to improve rugby rather than simply reviewing statistics or explaining how referees intend to apply the laws.

He also warned that the sport risks losing supporters and players if its concerns are not addressed.

“We’re losing our fanbase because people are frustrated with it, we’re losing players because they’re frustrated with it, so how are we going to get the game simpler?” he asked.

Hansen reckons the challenge is to make rugby better for everyone involved, from players and coaches to match officials and spectators.

“The game’s bigger than all of us so you’ve got to say something, you can’t just sit there,” he added.
