Argentina has joined forces with three neighbouring countries in an ambitious bid to bring the Rugby World Cup to South America in 2035.
The Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) has confirmed it is leading a joint bid with Uruguay, Chile and Brazil, with all four countries set to stage matches should their proposal be successful.
World Rugby is currently assessing potential venues and infrastructure ahead of identifying its preferred host in May 2027. The World Rugby Council is expected to make the final decision in November that year.
“In the submitted bid, it was established that, if chosen as the host for RWC 2035, the four countries will host World Cup matches,” the UAR said in a statement.
The bid points to the four nations’ combined population of 283 million, growing economies and experience of staging major international sporting events as reasons for taking rugby’s global showpiece to the region.
Eleven stadiums have been proposed, including eight in Argentina.
Buenos Aires’ Estadio Monumental and José Amalfitani are among the Argentinian venues, along with stadiums in La Plata, Córdoba, Santiago del Estero, Salta, Mendoza and Rosario.
Three of South America’s most famous sporting venues complete the list: the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, Chile’s National Stadium in Santiago and the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo.
“The region offers strong elements to be an attractive destination for the magnitude of the Rugby World Cup, the marquee event of our sporting scene,” the union said.

South America is expected to face stiff competition for the hosting rights, with 2019 World Cup hosts Japan as well as Spain and Italy also in the running.
A joint Middle Eastern bid involving Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar had also been mooted. However, reports last year indicated that Saudi Arabia had shelved its plans following a shift in the financial strategy of its Public Investment Fund (PIF).
World Rugby’s evaluation process includes physical feasibility studies and inspections of the proposed stadium infrastructure before the preferred candidate is announced.
