Stormers flashback: Derby win in the den

Deon Fourie and Hacjivah Dayimani were at the heart of the DHL Stormers’ bonus-point win against the Lions at Ellis Park in the 2021-22 Vodacom URC.

The back-rowers, with Evan Roos, formed an explosive loose trio during a title-winning campaign for the Stormers, as the Capetonians’ powerful pack of forwards laid the platform for their dangerous backline to shine on attack.

The first half was a hit-and-miss affair as both teams made their way close to the tryline on several occasions but failed to cross the whitewash, but the Stormers shifted to gears after the break to put their hosts away.

The only try scored in the first 40 minutes was a gem from Dayimani, who made a great break through the defence and stepped on the gas to touch down in the endzone. The conversion and a penalty by Manie Libbok earned the Stormers a 10-3 lead at half time.

The men from Cape Town picked up where they left off in the second stanza with Libbok adding his second penalty goal, before two quick tries from speedsters Seabelo Senatla and Sergeal Petersen helped extend their advantage to 25-3.

Man-of-the-match Fourie added their bonus-point try in the 72nd minute after a beautiful grubber from Warrick Gelant which the opposition failed to gather, the veteran ballhawk showing great awareness and support play to pounce on the ball between the uprights.

The Lions scored their only try compliments of Morne van den Berg, and Jordan Hendrikse’s conversion pushed their score into double figures, but solid defence from the Stormers secured them a resounding 32-10 victory.
