The Stormers’ bid to bring scrumhalf Haashim Pead back to Cape Town has reportedly stalled over the Lions’ transfer demands.
According to Rugby365, negotiations between the clubs now appear likely to collapse, despite Pead being keen on a return to his home city.
The 21-year-old is contracted to the Lions until 2028 but has struggled for regular game time at Ellis Park, where Morné van den Berg and Nico Steyn are ahead of him in the scrumhalf pecking order.
Rugby365 reports that the Lions have demanded a record transfer fee of more than double the R800,000 reportedly paid to facilitate Siya Kolisi’s move from the Sharks to the Stormers.
Pead was reportedly prepared to contribute towards the transfer fee himself, but another stumbling block has been the Lions’ insistence that the full amount be paid upfront.
The latest development follows a report in Rapport that the Stormers were prepared to pay a significant fee to secure Pead’s services.
The Cape club is looking to bolster its scrumhalf depth following Dewaldt Duvenage’s retirement and Asad Moos’ move to the Lions.
Imad Khan is also sidelined with a serious knee injury, while Cobus Reinach is regularly away on Springbok duty.
