The Stormers are reportedly willing to pay the Lions a big transfer fee to bring scrumhalf Haashim Pead to Cape Town.
According to Rapport, the Cape club is eager to secure the services of the highly rated 21-year-old, despite him being contracted to the Lions until 2028.
The Lions were reportedly willing to release Pead in exchange for Stormers prop Sazi Sandi, but John Dobson was unwilling to sanction the move. Sandi is contracted in Cape Town until June 2027 and has already agreed to join the Bulls thereafter.
That has left the Stormers facing the prospect of buying Pead out of his Lions contract. Rapport claims that the fee could be the largest yet paid for a player moving between two South African teams, beating the R800,000 paid to facilitate Siya Kolisi’s move from the Sharks to the Stormers.

Pead, who hails from the Bo-Kaap and attended Bishops, was named Player of the Tournament at last year’s Junior World Championship and has attended a Springbok alignment camp.
However, Pead is behind Morné van den Berg and Nico Steyn in the Lions’ scrumhalf pecking order.
The Stormers, meanwhile, are looking to strengthen their scrumhalf stocks following Dewaldt Duvenage’s retirement and Asad Moos’ move to the Lions. They are also currently without Imad Khan, who suffered a serious knee injury against the All Blacks last month, while Cobus Reinach is regularly away on Springbok duty.
“He is a Cape boy. We would love to have him back,” Dobson told Rapport of Pead.
“It’s a matter between him and the Lions. We would love to have him, but it’s subject to the Lions because he is their player.”
