The 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season kicked off in fine style on Friday, as the Crusaders and Waratahs launched their campaigns with thrilling comeback victories.
In Christchurch, James O’Connor made an immediate impact off the bench, helping the Crusaders overturn a 14-0 deficit to claim a 33-25 win against the Hurricanes.
The veteran playmaker’s deft short ball sparked the attack that led to Sevu Reece’s go-ahead try, before he calmly slotted the conversion to give the hosts breathing room in the final quarter.
However, the night belonged to rookie scrumhalf Kyle Preston. Thrust into action after an early injury to Noah Hotham, Preston delivered a hat-trick performance, crossing once before the break and twice in the second half.
The Hurricanes, who led 22-14 at the interval, had capitalised on Scott Barrett’s yellow card, with hooker Jacob Devery scoring a brace. But they faded late as the Crusaders found their rhythm, securing an opening-round victory for embattled coach Rob Penney.
A fairytale debut for Kyle Preston
Is there anything better than a try on debut on home soil?

Meanwhile, in Sydney, the Waratahs snatched a 37-36 win over the Highlanders in a match featuring 10 lead changes. Replacement prop Siosifa Amone emerged as the hero, crashing over for the decisive try in the dying seconds after the visitors had taken the lead for the fifth time.
Joseph Suaalii made a statement on debut, showcasing his aerial prowess and elusive running. The code-crossing sensation played a key role in keeping the Waratahs in the contest, setting up Rob Leota’s try and producing a dazzling break that led to Max Jorgensen’s score. He also pulled off a crucial try-saving tackle on Tanielu Tele’a.
The Highlanders were relentless, with Timoci Tavatavanawai and Veveni Lasaqa among their try-scorers. But despite their resilience, Amone’s late double ensured the Waratahs avoided an early-season stumble.
