Tellaman On Why It Took Him 7 Years To Drop His Second Album. Tellaman has opened up about the lengthy gap between his albums, revealing that the seven-year wait was less about delaying his return and more about waiting for the right creative moment. For the South African singer, songwriter and producer, an album has to come from a place of genuine inspiration and intention.
Speaking about the time between projects, Tellaman explained that life and a lack of musical inspiration both played a role. “I feel like life happens, you know? Sometimes you just go through personal stuff, but other than that, I felt like I didn’t have enough to speak on musically,” he said. “I also felt like I didn’t have something that really interested me when it came to the music, the beats, the direction I wanted to take and stuff like that.”
Instead of rushing to satisfy expectations, Tellaman decided to step back and allow the music to come naturally. He continued releasing music sporadically, but drew a clear distinction between putting out individual songs and committing to an album.
“So I was like, you know what? Let me just chill. I’ll release music here and there, but when you’re talking about an album, I feel like it has to be something very intentional and very themed, where you put everything you have into it,” he said.
That mindset offers insight into why Tellaman has been selective about delivering a full-length solo project. Since his breakout years and the release of his 2019 album God Decides, which featured the popular single “Whipped”, the Durban-born artist has remained active through collaborations, singles and other projects, including Good Regardless in 2022 and Watchlist in 2024.
His creative journey has also continued through collaborations, most recently with Nasty C on their joint album T’s & C’s Apply. Still, Tellaman’s comments suggest that staying active musically does not necessarily mean being ready to present an entire album.
For him, a body of work needs to have a clear identity. The beats, themes, lyrics and overall direction all have to connect before he feels comfortable putting his name behind it. That has meant allowing himself the freedom to wait rather than releasing music simply because the industry expects a constant stream of new material.
The approach also reflects Tellaman’s evolution as an artist. Having moved between R&B, hip-hop, melodic sounds and other influences throughout his career, he has continued to explore different sides of his artistry rather than remain locked into one formula.
