Entries are open for the 2026 Presidential MSME and Co-operatives Awards, and the clock is ticking as we approach the closing date. Thus, entrepreneurs are strongly encouraged to apply. The Department of Small Business Development (DSBD), together with the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (SEDFA), has launched this year’s search for South Africa’s most innovative, resilient and impactful micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and co-operatives. The applications will close on 14 August 2026.
The awards show is one of the country’s most prominent platforms for recognising small business excellence, spotlighting entrepreneurs who are driving job creation, economic growth and inclusive development across every province. For the businesses that make it through, the prize is beyond recognition; it’s serious capital. The overall national winner stands to take home R2 million, while each of the ten category winners will receive R500 000, drawn from a R1 million prize pool allocated per category.

A Three-Phase Competition
The Presidential MSME Awards are structured as a nationwide competition that progresses in three distinct phases designed to ensure every district, and ultimately every province, gets a fair shot at producing a national winner.
Phase 1: District Pitching Competition: The competition starts locally, whereby MSMEs and co-operatives from every local municipality can apply through the official online application system. Once entries close, applications go through an eligibility and compliance screening process, and successful entrants are invited by their local SEDFA district office to pitch. One winner per category is then selected to represent that district at the provincial level.
Phase 2: Provincial (Premier’s) Awards: District winners advance to the Premier’s Awards, hosted in each of South Africa’s nine provinces. Only district-level winners are eligible to compete at this stage, and the standard is expected to rise accordingly. Provincial pitching sessions determine one winner per category, who then earns the right to represent their province at the national finale.
Phase 3: National Presidential MSME and Co-operatives Awards: This last stage features the best of the best. Here, the Premier’s Awards winners from all nine provinces go head-to-head at the national awards, where category winners and South Africa’s overall top MSMEs are announced.
Ten Award Categories
This year’s awards have an expansive range of ten categories, which all reflect the government’s priority sectors as well as the entrepreneurs it’s most eager to uplift. This includes women, youth, people with disabilities, and township and rural-based businesses.
1. MSME of the Year in the Agricultural Sector: This category is dedicated to businesses operating in agriculture, agri-processing, or across the agricultural value chain. Entrants are judged on innovation, sustainability, and their contribution to rural development and food security.
2. Financial Services MSME of the Year: Recognising small enterprises delivering financial products or services, from fintech innovators to community-based financial solutions that are improving access to finance and driving inclusion.
3. MSME of the Year in Digital Economy, Technology & Innovation: Celebrating businesses using technology and digital platforms to solve problems, reach new markets, or reshape how South Africans work, trade and connect.
4. Manufacturing Sector MSME of the Year: For enterprises adding value through production and manufacturing, supporting local supply chains and reducing reliance on imports, which is a key pillar of the government’s localisation agenda.
5. Green Economy MSME of the Year: Recognising businesses built around sustainability, renewable energy, resource efficiency, or environmental impact. These are enterprises helping South Africa transition to a greener economy.
6. Youth-Led MSME of the Year: This category is for enterprises founded and led by young entrepreneurs, recognising the role of youth-driven innovation in tackling unemployment and building the businesses of tomorrow.
7. Women-Led MSME of the Year: Celebrating women entrepreneurs building and scaling sustainable businesses, and their contribution to economic transformation and gender inclusion.
8. MSMEs Owned By Persons with Disabilities of the Year: Recognising entrepreneurs with disabilities who are overcoming structural barriers to build resilient, competitive businesses.
9. Co-operative of the Year: For co-operatives demonstrating strong governance, member benefit and community impact, highlighting the co-operative model as a vehicle for collective economic participation.
10. Township & Rural MSME of the Year: Celebrating businesses based in townships and rural areas that are driving local economic development, often in under-resourced communities with limited infrastructure.

Beyond the prize money, the Presidential MSME Awards is a reputable platform endorsed by the government that offers entrepreneurs visibility. Category and provincial winners gain national recognition, media exposure, and a direct line into small business ecosystems. This includes SEDFA’s broader network of funding, incubation and market access support.
