The controversy began when Pastor Lazarus criticized gospel singers for charging fees to perform at church events, arguing that they should rely on God to meet their needs rather than focusing on financial gain. His remarks sparked backlash, with Dakolo responding by accusing church leaders of gaslighting gospel artists. The singer defended their right to earn a living, stating that their fees support their livelihoods, families, and ministries.
Dakolo further suggested that if pastors cannot afford to pay gospel singers, they should rely on their church choir for ministrations.
In a recent post, Dakolo maintained that his comments were made with love and respect, while clarifying that he is not a gospel artist but a Christian raised in the church. Timi Dakolo then accused Pastor Femi Lazarus of charging fees for his ministry school, which provides teachings about Jesus.
According to Dakolo, the school charges at least $150 per student, with an estimated enrollment of over 1,000 students. Sharing a screenshot of the alleged fee structure, he questioned the fairness of the pastor’s stance, arguing that if gospel singers charging for ministrations makes them performers, then preachers who charge for teaching should also be considered “merchants of hope” and “motivational speakers.”
“Are you not selling the gift and revelation freely given to you?” Dakolo challenged, calling out what he saw as a double standard in Lazarus’ position.
