Towering Sale lock returns to SA

A former England U21 and Sale Sharks lock is set to play for Western Province in this year’s Currie Cup.

According to Rapport, Alex Groves has been offered a one-year contract by the Stormers, subject to a medical examination.

The 24-year-old South African, who attended St John’s College, was able to represent England’s Grand Slam-winning team in the 2021 U20 Six Nations because his father is English. He joined Sale from Bristol in February 2022.

In January 2024, doctors discovered an aneurism in Groves’ heart that required seven-hour open-heart surgery.

“Rugby saved my life. If I hadn’t been at Sale and had tests, I would never have known my heart was in danger of giving out,” said the 2.07m, 120kg lock.

A Stormers source told Rapport that Groves would be “properly examined” before putting pen to paper.

“This is obviously a very sensitive time in South African rugby,” he added, referring to the death on Wednesday of former Springbok wing Cornal Hendricks, who suffered from a heart condition.
