Trevor Nyakane’s battle back from a ruptured achilles tendon is being driven by one powerful motivation: he wants to decide for himself when his rugby career ends.
The popular Bok prop has been sidelined since suffering the serious injury last year, sparking questions about whether he’s played his final match.
Nyakane, however, is not ready to close that chapter.
The 37-year-old remains committed to his rehabilitation and still hopes to return to the field before eventually calling time on a career that includes two World Cup triumphs.

“As soon as I got injured, people asked me if I’m going to retire, and I always said I want to retire on my own terms,” Nyakane told News24.
“That’s one thing keeping me motivated to push right now. I want to walk off the field on my own two feet and not be carried off.
“That’s why I have been holding on and doing what I can at this point in time, in terms of my recovery, rehabilitation and physio, and getting stuck into a bit of work after that.”

Nyakane says he wants the opportunity to thank the people who have supported him throughout his journey.
“I wouldn’t want to walk off the field just because of an injury,” he added.
“I’m looking forward to healing and getting back to the field and retiring when I feel like it’s time for me to retire.”
