Tuks celebrate record-breaking title

Tuks dominated the NWU Eagles in the Varsity Cup final on Monday to secure a record-breaking sixth title.

Tuks won 31-3 after leading 10-3 at the break at Tuks Stadium in Pretoria.

Played in wet conditions, the game was dominated by kicks and tight exchanges among the forwards.

NWU started strongly, camping on the Tuks tryline, but were unable to breach the defence.

However, another Eagles attack resulted in a penalty and yellow card for Tuks left wing Munashe Dukuswa for an illegal tackle.

Flyhalf MJ Mostert stepped up to kick the penalty for a 3-0 lead on the stroke of the strategy break.

A rare Tuks foray into the opposition half saw the home side earn a penalty, which flyhalf Divan du Toit converted to level the scores.

Tuks suddenly found their rhythm and from a lineout drive close to the line, referee Hernus Coetzee awarded a penalty try for the illegal halting of the maul and sent NWU flank Guhan Du Bois to the sin bin.

On the stroke of half-time, Tuks were also reduced to 14 when centre Christiaan Vlok received his marching orders for a deliberate knockdown.

Early in the second half, Tuks capitalised on a NWU mistake in midfield and right wing Andile Myeni showed great skill to kick ahead and score a scintillating point-of-origin try.

Tuks were in full flow and another breakout by Myeni was followed by a lineout maul try to hooker Jean Fourie.

At 22-3, Tuks could taste victory, and Du Toit landed three penalties to turn the screw.

The Eagles threw everything at Tuks in a desperate attempt to get back in the game but the home side held firm, much to the delight of the capacity crowd.

TUKS – Tries: Penalty try, Andile Myeni, Jean Fourie. Conversion: Divan du Toit. Penalties: Du Toit (4).
NWU EAGLES – Penalty: MJ Mostert.
