Tyson Sybateli Weighs In On Whether Freestyling Is Still Essential To Hip Hop. Tyson Sybateli believes freestyling remains a fundamental skill every MC should respect, arguing that the culture must preserve the elements that helped build its foundation.

The Pretoria-based lyricist shared his views in a conversation with Raptype Mag, where the discussion turned to whether freestyling remains a requirement for rappers.
“You need to respect the fundamentals, you know?” he said. “There’s a reason why these things are the reason why we all got attention. These things worked before. We can’t just dismantle the things that built this thing up. Yeah. I mean, you can hit with the freestyle.”
His remarks highlight the importance of preserving hip-hop’s traditional elements as artists continue to explore new sounds and approaches to making music. For Tyson Sybateli, freestyling is more than an optional skill. It is part of the culture’s foundation, allowing MCs to demonstrate their lyrical ability, creativity and command of a beat without relying solely on prepared verses.
The rapper has also demonstrated his own freestyle ability throughout his career. His “No Paperwork” freestyle over a classic by The Notorious B.I.G. stands among the examples of his engagement with the tradition. His work across projects such as Home, Present. and Amehlo also reflects his approach to lyricism, combining introspection, confidence and playful wordplay.
Sybateli’s position does not dismiss the evolution of hip-hop or the different styles emerging within the genre. Instead, his remarks underline the importance of maintaining the skills that helped establish rap as a culture built around lyrical expression, competition and individual creativity.
As South African hip-hop continues to embrace diverse sounds and new approaches, his perspective adds to the ongoing conversation about what it means to be a well-rounded MC. For Sybateli, artistic growth should not come at the expense of the fundamentals that helped shape the genre.
