The Durban-born artist, born Omuhleumnguni Simamane, admitted that while fans enjoy the hits and the energy, few understand the personal and professional storms happening behind the scenes.

“Not a lot of people know what was going on, so they came up with their own stuff,” Usimamane shared candidly. The young star revealed he had to part ways with numerous key figures in his circle. He described the process as emotionally and creatively exhausting. “I had to fall out with a lot of people. My PR team, which is like my management. What else? I changed DJs about four times last year. My live performance engineers and my recording engineers, I changed them too a couple of times. So that was also draining for me.”

The constant turnover left the “Cheque” hitmaker questioning his future in the industry. At one point, the pressure became so overwhelming that he publicly signalled the end of his career on Twitter, declaring he planned to bow out by age 25. “I really didn’t see a point in doing this. That’s why I even came out on Twitter. I said, I’m just gonna stop at 25,” he explained. “’Cause that thing is happening behind the scenes.”

Usimamane’s comments paint a picture of an artist grappling with the unglamorous side of success. After exploding onto the national stage with platinum-certified releases and record-breaking streaming numbers for his debut album 20th: Days Before Maud, the Umlazi-born talent found himself navigating a whirlwind of industry relationships, expectations, and external noise. Fans and critics often consume the music in isolation, unaware of the sacrifices and shake-ups required to keep the engine running.

“They don’t know anything that is going on with me. They just enjoy the music,” he noted, with a mix of resignation and realism in his tone. The interview comes amid a wave of diss tracks released by Usimamane targeting GMG, sparking widespread conversation across South African hip hop.
