Usimamane Reveals One Thing He Wants To Do Before Releasing His Next Album. South African rapper Usimamane is looking to take a trip down memory lane before unveiling his next major project, and he wants to do it the old-fashioned way.
The Umlazi-born rapper recently shared a candid late-night post revealing that one of his biggest wishes before the album arrives is to use public transport just like he did during his come-up.
“My wish before this album is to ride a quantum taxi/mageza to town pay like everyone else and ride a bus (intercape) to Durban like my come up,” Usimamane wrote. “It will make me so happy and my team won’t allow me but I’ll do it anyways fuck it.”
For Usimamane, the idea goes beyond simply catching a taxi or bus. It is about reconnecting with a chapter of his life that existed long before the fame, private transport and growing attention that now surround him.
The “quantum” or “mageza” is a familiar part of everyday life across South African townships, while Intercape has long been a popular option for travellers making long-distance trips between cities. For an artist who has travelled from the streets of Umlazi to the national hip-hop spotlight, taking those same routes again would offer a personal reminder of where his journey began.
His desire also highlights the distance success can sometimes create between artists and the environments that shaped them. While public transport may be an everyday necessity for many South Africans, it can become difficult for increasingly recognisable artists to move around unnoticed. Usimamane appears willing to take that risk, even if his team has other ideas.
The timing of his wish is equally significant. Earlier this year, the rapper released G-Wagon Music: Baby Tai on his birthday, presenting the project as a glimpse into the larger Tai Lung album still to come. His recent music has continued to explore his growth, ambitions and the realities that come with his rapidly rising profile.
A ride through town in a Quantum or a trip to Durban on an Intercape may therefore seem ordinary on the surface, but for Usimamane it could become something much more meaningful.
Whether his team manages to stop him remains unclear. Judging by his final words, however, the rapper seems determined to make the journey happen.
For an artist whose story began in Umlazi, returning to the same seats, roads and routines that formed part of his early journey could be his most personal pre-album ritual yet.
