Former Springbok Brendan Venter has dropped “wine consultant” from his Saracens job title and will fulfil his media obligations with the English club.
The Telegraph reports that Venter’s role has been changed for the third time since he returned to Saracens at the start of the season after succeeding Mark McCall. His title will now be “head of culture and technical director”, according to CEO Ed Coetzee.
The change follows a £5,000 (R109,000) fine imposed on Saracens by Prem Rugby after Venter failed to fulfil media duties expected of the club’s lead coach.
It was previously reported that Venter had been listed as “head of rugby culture and wine consultant” after initially being appointed director of rugby. Saracens had argued that head coach Joe Shaw could handle the media responsibilities instead.

Venter had been reluctant to take on the media responsibilities after previously receiving several fines for comments made during post-match press conferences.
Coetzee said Venter’s principal responsibility remained resetting the culture at the training ground and StoneX Stadium, with his influence extending across the club.
“Brendan’s role is best defined as head of culture and technical director, and with immediate effect, this will be his title,” Coetzee said.
He confirmed that Venter would still have significant media duties, including an interview with TNT on Sunday, while Shaw would remain responsible for pre- and post-match interviews.
