Vowles: Sharks must match Boland muscle

Sharks XV coach Mike Vowles expects a fierce physical examination from a settled Boland Cavaliers side in KwaMashu on Saturday.

After opening their Currie Cup campaign with three away fixtures, Vowles says the Sharks have taken confidence from their performances despite only registering one victory.

“We’ve obviously had a tough start to the competition with three away games, however I feel we’ve been massively competitive in all three of those outings, having created a lot of opportunities,” he said.

“As a result, the squad has really grown in confidence. There’s a real connection and cohesion starting to be built, so we’re taking a lot of positives away from the start and we remain really optimistic around the rest of the Currie Cup competition.”

Despite a 20-15 defeat to the Pumas in Wellington last Sunday, Vowles believes the Cavaliers will arrive with plenty of confidence, warning that their continuity and physicality make them one of the toughest sides in the competition.

“They’re a settled and very mature team, a side that has played a lot of rugby together and pride themselves on momentum and physicality,” said Vowles.

“We need to be able to match that and, more importantly, we need to be brave, stick to our DNA and play the type of rugby that excites, that’s physical and relentless.”

Vowles believes playing at the Princess Magogo Stadium will provide an extra lift.

“The fact that we’re playing in KwaMashu is really exciting for the group to take the rugby back to the community, and to feel their love and support for the Sharks will be massive for us.”
