Wales boss to wield axe for Bok clash

Steve Tandy is set to rejig his Wales side for Saturday’s Test against the Springboks, and former captain Sam Warburton believes only five players are definite starters.

The Welsh Dragons travel to South Africa after a 35-21 loss to Los Pumas in Argentina, with Tandy confirming changes are on the cards ahead of a tough Nations Championship clash at Kings Park.

“Everyone might not get a chance but we’ll definitely make some changes from the game,” the head coach was quoted post-match in San Juan.

“It’s a lot of travel and it is physical … We’ll assess everyone and see how they pull up and make a decision tomorrow evening on the team.”

Before Wales’ defeat to the Pumas, the 79-cap Warburton identified hooker Dewi Lake, flankers Jac Morgan and Aaron Wainwright, scrumhalf Tomos Williams and centre Eddie James as the only players to have “cemented” their starting spots.

“We should celebrate this, that we can have a debate over who starts,” said Warburton on ITV, pointing to a tussle for the No 6 jersey between Alex Mann and James Botham.

MALLETT: Bok old guard led the way

Despite last week’s result in Argentina, which followed victory over Fiji in the opening round of the Nations Championship, Tandy insisted Wales are making progress.

“We had a great result [against Fiji] and again we would like more from our performance but I think that’s the expectation we have as a group going forward,” he said.

“There’s disappointment but going to the world champions we know they can probably put two or three teams out that are really impressive.

“There’s a lot of lessons in there for us. Argentina probably dominated the physicality piece early doors so that’s something we definitely need to have a look at going forward.”
