Williams’ new club revealed

Springbok scrumhalf Grant Williams’ next team has finally been confirmed.

The 29-year-old has signed for the Kobelco Kobe Steelers, ending weeks of speculation following the announcement that he would leave the Sharks at the end of the season.

Williams will join the Japanese club ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, bringing an end to an eight-year stint in Durban where he developed into one of South Africa’s premier scrumhalves.

His departure leaves a sizeable hole in the Sharks squad, with Jaden Hendrikse and Ross Braude expected to shoulder greater responsibility moving forward. JP Pietersen’s ranks have, however, been bolstered by the signing of Springbok Ivan van Zyl.

For Williams, the move represents a new challenge.

“I am very honoured and excited to be joining the Kobelco Kobe Steelers from the 2026-27 season,” he said. “I have heard many wonderful things about the club and the city of Kobe, and I am looking forward to meeting the Steel Mates and playing for Kobe.”

Kobe also announced the signing of All Blacks back George Bridge.
