Rookie Stormers flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed is ready for the biggest test of his young career against the All Blacks, according to former scrumhalf Nic Groom.
Groom, who coached Ahmed at Wynberg Boys’ High and made 57 appearances for the Stormers between 2011 and 2016, told Rugby365 the 20-year-old has earned his opportunity after consistently producing under pressure.
“I’m really not surprised by his success; he’s a player who has consistently performed at every training and every game,” Groom said.

Ahmed will make his Stormers debut in the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry opener on Friday after helping the Junior Springboks retain the Junior World Championship and representing SA A earlier this year.
“He’s performed to some of the highest levels I’ve seen in schoolboy rugby, so on the one hand, he deserves to be where he is, and I’m really excited for him,” Groom added.
“If I had to describe him as a person, he’s the ultimate competitor, and someone with an exceptional work ethic.”

Groom does not expect perfection on debut but believes Ahmed will stay true to his strengths.
“I don’t think anyone expects the perfect performance because this will be the biggest challenge of his career,” he added.
“I know he will continue to compete regardless of the opposition; I’m sure he will play to his strengths.”
Groom added that Ahmed’s all-round game has continued to develop.
“He’s got exceptional raw ingredients … He takes responsibility on his shoulders and does what needs to be done at the right time. He’s a big-moment player and has worked hard on his craft to get to where he is now.”
