Speaking during a recent interview, the acclaimed rapper, producer and executive dismissed the criticism, arguing that people often overlook the extensive work he continues to do behind the scenes.

“People online are always telling me I’m a gatekeeper,” Zoocci said. “If you’re going to call somebody a gatekeeper, it’s the person who’s keeping music away.”

He explained that while some fans have questioned the pace of his solo releases, they have ignored the consistent stream of albums and projects he has helped create through production, engineering and executive work.

Looking back on his career, Zoocci noted that his output has remained steady since the release of his debut EP, Morning Star, in 2017.

“I’ve not dropped a minimum of three albums,” he said. “Last year, we had about four albums that came out. We had Loyal to the Plug, Yanga’s project, the OG Ringo album and more.”

Much of that work has been carried out alongside longtime collaborator Big Lez under their Pierce Audio banner, where they have continued to produce, mix and oversee multiple projects every year.

Zoocci stressed that making music has always been his driving force, regardless of whether he is in front of the microphone or working behind the scenes.

“A lot of what’s coming out has my name on it,” he said. “Whether I’m on the mic, producing, mixing or whatever, I’m making music. That’s my only passion, to make music in whichever capacity.”

He acknowledged that fans naturally want to hear more of his own music but believes they should also recognise his contributions as a producer and curator.

“If the output for me as an artist with my vocals has slowed down, look at the production. It hasn’t slowed down,” he explained. “You just have to understand I’m multifaceted. If you like me, you have to like the projects I’m dropping. You can’t just want to hear my voice all the time.”

According to Zoocci, the past few years have been about expanding his impact beyond being a recording artist and investing more time in developing projects and supporting other musicians.

“There’s time for everything,” he said. “There will be a time for me to focus on that. But in these last couple of years, it was time for me to focus on my curation work and my executive work.”

His remarks reinforce his position as one of South Africa’s hip-hop’s most influential behind-the-scenes figures, emphasising that while his solo catalogue may have grown more slowly, his contribution to the country’s music scene has remained constant.
