Lawrence Dallaglio’s 2003 World Cup winner’s medal has sold for less than expected as the former England captain battles mounting financial problems.
The medal fetched £54,000 (R1.18-million) at auction, towards the lower end of an estimated value that went as high as £80,000 (R1.75-million).
It was among 13 items from Dallaglio’s decorated playing career that went under the hammer, raising a combined £106,400 (R2.32 million).
The 54-year-old, who helped England beat Australia in the 2003 World Cup final, was declared bankrupt in 2025 following a costly divorce from his wife of 20 years.
He sold his family home for £2.4-million (R52.4-million) last May, reportedly £900,000 (R19.7-million) below its original asking price.
Dallaglio was subsequently ordered to repay an overdrawn director’s loan of more than £366,500 (R8-million).
His financial difficulties have now forced him to part with several other reminders of his illustrious rugby career.
His 2003 Six Nations winner’s medal fetched £7,500 (R164,000), while his medal from England’s defeat to the Springboks in the 2007 World Cup final sold for £5,000 (R109,000).
A British & Irish Lions cap attracted £11,000 (R240,000), with an England international cap going for £8,000 (R175,000).
Other items included a 2004 European Champions Cup winner’s medal (£4,400), a World Rugby Hall of Fame cap (£2,400), a 1997 Lions tour training jersey (£1,800) and five pewter tankards (£1,600).
His medal from the 1993 Sevens World Cup final fetched just £1,100 (R24,000), while several other medals failed to reach their reserve prices.

Dallaglio reportedly still owes more than £400,000 (R8.7-million) to HM Revenue & Customs and two other creditors, as well as a further £423,570 (R9.3-million) in overdrawn director’s loans relating to his sports company, Lawrence Dallaglio Ltd.
