His move into film marks another step in a career built around stories of township life, socio-economic struggles and the realities of growing up in South Africa. Shot in Johannesburg and Mozambique, Mzansi brings together local slang, street fashion and everyday experiences with elements of Mozambican culture. The film premieres in Johannesburg on 26 October 2026, followed by a second screening and livestream on 2 November.

Speaking to Forbes Africa in New York, Maglera explained how the project reflects the experiences that have shaped his music since childhood.

“I grew up in South African street culture so much, with the slang, the fashion,” he said. “When I was eleven, I was rapping about the same stuff I’m rapping about right now. Socio-economic issues, street culture, where I’m from, the things I’ve seen. It’s not just a South African movie; it’s a southern African movie, and I integrate our culture with Mozambican culture.”

Maglera Doe Boy stars alongside fellow musicians 25K and Young Stunna, bringing together artists whose creative backgrounds are rooted in music. His work outside the recording studio continues to expand, with upcoming tracks Izinja, featuring 25K and Sir Trill, and Tadiana carrying the influence of American producer Swizz Beatz, whom he regards as both an adviser and a big brother.

Beyond music and film, Maglera has also explored fashion through collaborations involving A$AP Rocky’s PUMA campaign and MaXhosa Africa. However, his growing presence across different creative industries has not taken away from his reflections on the personal challenges that can accompany life beyond the township.

The rapper said the past eight to nine months had given him time to look inward and reflect on his journey. At 33, he recognises that leaving the environment where he grew up does not automatically mean leaving its emotional challenges behind.

“I spent time in the past eight to nine months, digging deep within myself,” he reflected. “I’m 33 this year, and my take on it is that when you leave the ‘hood, you have to heal so much before you become anyone in the world.”

His perspective also extends to the financial risks involved in building a career and pursuing opportunities outside established paths. For Doe Boy, failure can be part of the process, particularly for those attempting something new.

“Financially, you have to make mistakes; you need to experience losing a lot, especially if you’re a pioneer,” he explained. “So you have to take risks, but know when the risk should be applied, and when it’s going to be a bad risk. I think discernment and taking time to balance your ambition with judging things clearly is my advice.”

With Mzansi, Maglera Doe Boy is extending his creative reach while remaining connected to the experiences that have informed his music. His transition into acting offers another platform to tell stories about Southern African identity, street culture and the realities of life beyond the neighbourhoods that shaped him.
