SA Rugby says Springbok fans should not expect ticket prices to be reduced the week before a match.
Tickets for the Boks’ Nations Championship opener against England at Ellis Park were slashed this week after slow sales.
At one stage, only about 21,000 tickets had been sold for the clash at the 62,000-capacity venue, with remaining seats ranging from R950 to R3,000.
Tickets previously listed from R950 on Ticketmaster were later reduced to R650 and then to R450.
A crowd of 52,700 eventually watched the Boks beat England 45-21 on Saturday, but SA Rugby says the late price cut should not be viewed as a sign of things to come.
“This is not a precedent for future seasons, but a response to market conditions with the sole aim of generating as much support as possible for the Springbok team,” an SA Rugby spokesperson told Rapport.
RASSIE: Boks had to be honest at half-time
Some supporters who bought tickets early at higher prices were angered by the reduction, while others joked on social media that they would now wait until shortly before kick-off before buying tickets.
SA Rugby said the number of major rugby fixtures in Gauteng had contributed to the slow sales.
“Gauteng is hosting six high-profile rugby matches in the next nine weeks, including Springbok Tests – and tens of thousands of tickets have already been snapped up,” the spokesperson said.
