Flash Ikumkani Opens Up About Emtee, ‘BADMAN’, isiXhosa Representation & Upcoming Album ‘MINENZIMA.’ Eastern Cape rapper Flash Ikumkani is reflecting on his journey in South African hip-hop, the importance of staying true to his roots and the experiences shaping his music.

From his early breakthrough with Emtee to making history as the first Xhosa rapper invited to the BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher, the rapper has continued to establish his identity through authentic storytelling and cultural representation.
With his latest collaboration with Emtee, “BADMAN,” receiving radio attention on 5FM, Flash sat down with SA Hip Hop Mag to discuss the record, industry politics, his late grandfather’s influence on MINENZIMA, his creative consistency and the emerging talent coming out of King William’s Town.
In this conversation, Flash Ikumkani shares his perspective on the industry, the stories behind his music and what listeners can expect from his next chapter.
SA Hip Hop Mag: BADMAN says you can do the right thing and still get painted as the villain. What was the moment that made you want to write that record?
Flash Ikumkani: The vibes happened naturally in the studio. We locked in and BADMAN because that’s how we felt at the time.
SA Hip Hop Mag: You and Emtee both talk about fake beefs and manufactured drama. Have you been on the receiving end of a beef that was never real, and how did you handle it?
Flash Ikumkani: To speak for myself, I’ve had my fair share of drama in the industry, wrong or right, but I’ve always tried to remain humble and do right every chance I get.
SA Hip Hop Mag: Emtee gave you your first opportunity. What do you remember about that first moment, and what did it mean to land on a track with him now as a lead single?
Flash Ikumkani: It changed my life. He recognised my hard work and talent, and I’m forever grateful for that. Even years later, I’m grateful that we can still make great records for the fans who were there since day one.
SA Hip Hop Mag: BADMAN is being called one of the pioneering SA gangster hip-hop records to get radio rotation, and it’s getting love on 5FM. What does it say about where SA hip-hop is right now that a street-centred record can sit on mainstream radio?
Flash Ikumkani: It just goes to show that real Hip-hop is still wanted out there by the listeners, and there’s a whole lot of big records to come.
SA Hip Hop Mag: You were the first Xhosa rapper invited to the BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher. What did that moment mean for you, and for isiXhosa in hip-hop?
Flash Ikumkani: I always represent where I come from. I made sure to rap in my native language to show the world where I come from. I represented my culture and the people well. It was a very proud moment for me.
SA Hip Hop Mag: MINENZIMA is named after your late grandfather. What lessons or values from him will listeners hear in the album, and is there a song on it that hits closest to home?
Flash Ikumkani: All my songs have his teachings in some way, but to answer your question, there are special songs dedicated to how he taught me how to live life. A lot of people will resonate with his teachings because they made me who I am today.
SA Hip Hop Mag: You dropped 11 music videos in five months. What drove that pace, and did you ever worry about quality versus quantity?
Flash Ikumkani: My consistency and level of professionalism are what have kept me at the top. It’s never been quantity over quality. It’s always been quality. I make sure my supporters get the best quality every time I drop music.
SA Hip Hop Mag: You’re repping King William’s Town and the Eastern Cape on a national stage. What do you want the Eastern Cape hip-hop scene to be known for, and who’s the next artist from there we should be watching?
Flash Ikumkani: I want to continue to be known for being real. I want to be known for real stories that people will relate to, even when everything is all said and done. An artist to look out for very soon is 043 Ghxst, a very talented trapper from King William’s Town.
