Ruan Nortjé has hailed Riley Norton’s maturity and “tremendous potential” after getting to know the 20-year-old lock.
Norton is one of six uncapped players in the Springbok squad for the European leg of the Nations Championship, although none have been selected for Saturday’s Test against Italy in Turin.
The former Junior Boks captain impressed in the Boks’ non-cap match against the Barbarians in Gqeberha in July and was set to make his Test debut against England at Ellis Park before suffering a hamstring injury in training.
He has since made six appearances for the Stormers, earning another call-up to Rassie Erasmus’ squad.
Nortjé, who has 24 Test caps and will partner Salmaan Moerat in the second row against Italy, has been struck by Norton’s maturity at such a young age.
“It’s crazy to think he’s only 20 years old,” he told Rugby365. “If I personally have to look at myself at that age, it’s crazy to think how mature these players are.
“Maybe that’s how the game became more professional at school level, or he’s just a very special player.
“But he’s got tremendous potential in him; he’s definitely a great leader. I’m very happy and excited for what the future holds for him.”

The 28-year-old hopes to get the opportunity to pack down alongside Norton.
“Maybe if we get the privilege to play together, it would definitely be awesome to work with him,” he said.
