Furlong faces ban for testicles grab

Leinster prop Tadhg Furlong has been cited following an alleged incident involving Munster No 8 Gavin Coombes during Saturday’s URC clash in Dublin.

Furlong faces a disciplinary hearing after being accused of grabbing Coombes’ testicles.

The incident occurred in the 37th minute, with Coombes bringing it to referee Andrew Brace’s attention. However, TMO Colin Stanley was unable to find sufficient video evidence of foul play.

The URC confirmed on Monday that Scottish citing commissioner Peter Ferguson had lodged a complaint against Furlong under Law 9.27. The law prohibits conduct contrary to the spirit of good sportsmanship, including grabbing, twisting or squeezing an opponent’s genitals.

Details of the disciplinary process will be announced in due course.

STATE OF THE URC: Sharks bite, Lions bruised

“All I know is that I back our players 100% that if they make an allegation like that, they wouldn’t do it lightly,” Munster coach Clayton McMillan said after the match. “He’s not that sort of person, Gavin, so we’ll see where that goes.”

Leinster coach Leo Cullen said, “Obviously, once that accusation is made, it becomes a serious matter for the citing commissioner.

“My comment is not going to help in any way here, but from what I’ve seen, I can’t see anything.”

Furlong has earned 88 Test caps for Ireland and a ban could rule him out of next month’s Nations Championship, which includes a fixture against the Springboks in Dublin.
