Water access is a pervasive crisis across South Africa, affecting millions. MANZI Water is a company aiming to solve this critical problem by pioneering sustainable and innovative solutions. On this week’s founder focus, we are profiling Alfred Challis, the CEO of MANZI Water.
“The business was established during a period of significant uncertainty in the industry, where many independent entrepreneurs were seeking a more sustainable and transparent way to continue their businesses,” he says.
MANZI Water was not only created as a means to boost independent entrepreneurship, but also to reduce strain on municipal infrastructure and concerns around delivering quality water.
Providing Water Solutions for a Better South Africa
“Safe, clean drinking water should not be a luxury product, and building access to it should empower the people closest to the communities being served,” Challis explains.
MANZI Water was founded with a clear and urgent purpose: to make safe, clean drinking water more accessible and affordable for everyday South Africans.
The company’s focus has been on building a network of local entrepreneurs who can provide purified drinking water at prices that households can sustain. This provides an accessible opportunity for South Africans who aim to start a water business. Each outlet applies a six-step, multi-stage purification process aligned with South African drinking water standards to ensure consistent quality and safety.
However, the broader vision extends beyond purified drinking water. “The intention has always been to create a business model enabling independent entrepreneurs to build sustainable businesses while serving their communities,” Challis says.
A Decentralised Approach to Growth
The primary driver behind MANZI Water’s growth has been its decentralised structure. Instead of following a traditional franchise model, MANZI Water operates through a licensed network supported by a governance framework known as the Central Hub.
“This structure was intentionally designed as an alternative to conventional franchise systems. Conventional systems concentrate control and limit entrepreneurial independence,” he explains.
Within the MANZI Water model, operators run their own businesses while benefiting from shared support, standards, and brand alignment. A key principle of the Central Hub is that no single party can exercise undue control over the network. This creates a more balanced and transparent environment, ensuring long-term fairness and stability for all.
The result is a network that has been able to expand rapidly while remaining grounded in local ownership and accountability, demonstrating a sustainable alternative to traditional, centralised utility models.
Improving Accessibility and Affordability
“Accessibility and affordability are central to the MANZI Water model,” Challis highlights.
Alfred broke down the process to use, explaining that all outlets operate on a refill system, allowing customers to bring their own containers and access safe, clean drinking water at a significantly lower cost than bottled water. This makes high-quality drinking water available to a much wider segment of the population.
Also, because outlets operate independently, they are embedded within the communities they serve. This allows for greater responsiveness and consistency in supply at a local level.
The objective remains straightforward: to provide safe, clean drinking water that is accessible without placing financial strain on households.
Providing Sustainable Solutions
Water sustainability for SMEs is essential, especially in the current environment where South Africa faces water scarcity.
Sustainability forms an important part of the MANZI Water model. The refill approach reduces reliance on single-use plastic by encouraging repeated use of containers. Over time, this significantly lowers plastic waste compared to conventional bottled water consumption.
This model also makes sustainable behaviour practical and accessible. Customers can reduce their environmental impact without incurring additional costs.
“Sustainability, in this context, extends beyond environmental considerations. It includes building systems that are economically and socially sustainable over the long term, while remaining friendly to our planet,” he notes.
Scaling Manzi Water
Challis explains that building MANZI Water has required discipline, adaptability, and a strong operational focus.
“One of the key lessons has been that scaling in the water industry demands consistency in quality and strict adherence to standards. Water is a daily necessity, and trust in the product must be earned and maintained.”
MANZI Water’s decentralised, people-centric approach has proven both resilient and scalable, enabling independent entrepreneurs to build their own businesses while the network grows organically and maintains strong local accountability.
The model also allows entrepreneurs to operate without the typical royalty structures associated with traditional franchise systems, enabling them to retain more value within their own businesses and reinvest in growth.
Growing Manzi Water
MANZI Water’s long-term vision is to continue expanding access to safe, clean, and affordable drinking water across South Africa, with a view toward broader growth across Southern Africa over time.
“Growth will remain aligned with the principles that shaped the business: accessibility, quality, transparency, and entrepreneurial empowerment,” he acknowledges.
There is a clear opportunity to strengthen water accessibility while supporting small business development at scale. MANZI Water is positioned to contribute meaningfully to both.
If the MANZI Water network continues to grow in a way that improves access to safe, clean, and affordable drinking water while enabling independent entrepreneurs to succeed, it will represent a meaningful and lasting impact for South African citizens.
