JP Pietersen believes a new generation of Durban talent has arrived, and their performances in Gqeberha have convinced him the Sharks’ future is in safe hands.
The doubleheader at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium offered a glimpse of South Africa’s emerging stars, with 10 Sharks players featuring for the Springboks and five more representing South Africa A.
For Pietersen, it was more than a successful week for his players – it was a glimpse into what the Sharks could become.
“That was almost the whole Sharks team on show. It was great to see our guys given exposure at international level, and that would have given them the confidence that they belong there,” Pietersen told IOL.
“I was thrilled because the future of the Sharks was on prominent display.”
That optimism follows a strong finish to the Sharks’ Vodacom URC campaign, even though they failed to reach the playoffs. They scored freely in their final three home matches against Munster, Benetton and Zebre, and Pietersen believes the energy of his younger players was a major factor.
One player who particularly impressed him last Saturday was flyhalf Vusi Moyo.
“I always knew Vusi was going to be good, but to perform like that. His composure and the way he ran the show is what you want from your flyhalf – to know when to pass, when to kick. It was beautiful to see that he is ready, and it gives me extra confidence.”

Moyo’s performances earned him a place in the Springbok squad for the Nations Championship alongside Sharks wing Jaco Williams.
