Steven Kitshoff believes Siya Kolisi’s return to the Springbok starting XV could provide the leadership and composure the team needs to bounce back against the All Blacks in Cape Town on Saturday.
Kolisi comes back into the No 6 jersey after Paul de Villiers impressed in the Springboks’ recent matches, with the Boks looking to level the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series after last weekend’s 33-16 defeat at Ellis Park.
For Kitshoff, Kolisi’s value extends far beyond what is seen on the field.
“The big thing people don’t realise about Siya is the things that aren’t seen,” the former Bok prop said at a breakfast event on Thursday as quoted by Netwerk24.
“Siya is a good leader and team man, and cares deeply about the Springboks. What people don’t see is his work rate – his contribution at the breakdowns to make sure that Grant Williams or Cobus Reinach get quick ball.
“That’s what makes Siya so special and why he’s had such a great career with the Springboks and is still going to have a great future. He does exceptional work when the camera isn’t on him and that’s what makes him such a great leader.”

Kitshoff also believes Kolisi’s experience could prove crucial after the Boks were unable to convert their opportunities in Johannesburg.
“He understands the game and has more than 100 Tests’ experience,” said Kitshoff.
“Paul was excellent for the Boks in the last few games and is incredibly good at the breakdowns, but Siya’s leadership, experience and the calmness he brings will be huge for the Boks. When things go badly, he has the ability to keep the guys together.”
