Ntlabakanye appeal in Wada’s hands

Springbok prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye has not appealed his 18-month doping ban, but the case may not be over yet.

SA Institute for Drug-Free Sport CEO Khalid Galant confirmed to Rapport that no appeal has been received from the player following last month’s ruling, which suspended Ntlabakanye until 13 November 2027.

However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) still has until 18 June to challenge the sanction.

Ntlabakanye tested positive for anastrozole in May last year and also declared the use of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), an anabolic steroid, as part of medication he had been taking.

He argued that the substances were taken with the approval of a doctor after he was referred to a specialist for a medical condition.

The independent tribunal that heard the case took mitigating circumstances into account and imposed an 18-month suspension rather than the maximum four-year ban.

If Wada believes the punishment is too lenient, it can appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
