The Pumas have received a timely boost ahead of Saturday’s SA Cup final against Griquas in Kimberley.
Captain Sampie Swiegers left the field with a shoulder injury during the Pumas’ 42-36 semi-final win over the Cheetahs in Mbombela last Friday.
But assistant coach Corné Steenkamp told Netwerk24 that the powerhouse tighthead prop, who scored two tries in the match, should be ready to lead the Lowvelders in the decider.
“Sampie trained this morning,” he said on Monday.

The final will be the latest chapter in an increasingly fierce rivalry between the Pumas and Griquas.
The Peacock Blues beat the Pumas 44-34 in Kimberley during the league stage last month, while the teams have split the last two SA Cup finals. Griquas won 46-24 in Kimberley in 2024 before the Pumas responded with a 39-14 triumph in Mbombela last year.
Steenkamp believes his side are well equipped for another away decider.
“I don’t think it’s a big factor that we have to travel for the final,” he said. “We are a professional team, we regularly play away matches in which we achieve success.
“We have won finals before and know it is within our reach to do it again.”
Saturday’s decider kicks off at 6:30pm.
