Yaqeen grateful for Sacha’s voice in his ear

After a match-winning cameo at Cape Town Stadium, flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed wants to keep soaking up as much know-how from the Stormers’ Springbok stars as he can.

The 20-year-old came off the bench and scored the decisive two tries of Saturday’s 52-40 triumph for John Dobson’s men over the Scarlets.

With the teams locked at 40-40 as the match entered the final 10 minutes, he went under the posts to put the hosts ahead, before crossing again at the death to seal the 92-point thriller.

Ahmed, who started in Edinburgh three weeks ago, was making his first appearance in the shadow of Table Mountain since his club debut against the All Blacks on 7 August.

“There’s nothing better than playing at Cape Town Stadium and for the Stormers,” he told reporters. “I’m just happy to be back in the team and get that last 20 minutes.

“The last 20 minutes was really difficult in terms of all the injuries happening, but I’m just glad that I could play my game.

“Having those voices in my ear like Sacha [Feinberg-Mngomezulu] when I came on, it made such a big difference for me in terms of decision-making.

“I believe I can only get better.”

A Junior World Championship winner and SA A representative earlier this year, Ahmed could run out at 10 against Ulster in round five of the URC next week, with Dobson set to rest Feinberg-Mngomezulu.

“It’s a privilege that the Boks are in the set-up because you get to learn from them and what they’re bringing,” he said.

“Whatever info I can get, whether it’s from Sacha or Damian [Willemse], I’m taking it with both hands because I know it’ll be the betterment of my future.

“They take the time to be with you. It’s like they’re investing in you, because you’re really working together.”

Fellow former Junior Springbok Haashim Pead was Man of the Match in his first Stormers start, scoring his maiden try off an offload from Feinberg-Mngomezulu.

“He did great,” Dobson added. “He brings energy, passes well, looks for a break. He was magic.”
