Surprise call-up for Wallabies veteran

Coach Les Kiss has turned to an experienced back for the Wallabies’ Nations Championship campaign next month.

Kurtley Beale returns to the national squad for the first time since 2024, replacing Hunter Paisami, who is unavailable due to personal reasons.

Even though Beale’s name last appeared on a Wallabies squad sheet in 2024, an achilles injury put paid to his season and the 37-year-old’s last Test appearance in gold came against Wales in Cardiff in 2021.

“With Hunter’s unavailability we’re excited by what Kurtley can bring to the group,” Kiss said. “He’s got 95 caps worth of Test experience and while he will primarily cover inside centre he has the versatility to play a number of positions across the backline.

“Kurtley’s also been in great form for the Western Force in Super Rugby Pacific and Super Rugby Aus and is excited to contribute to the environment.”

Meanwhile, James Ramm has also joined the squad after impressing for Northland during their run to the NPC final in New Zealand.

The 28-year-old fullback and wing previously featured in the Northampton Saints squads that won the Premiership title last season and in 2023-24. He will link up with the Force ahead of the 2027 Super Rugby season.

“James is a player we’ve kept a keen eye on for a while and his form for Northland has been exceptional in recent times,” Kiss said.

“He’s someone who knows the UK well having spent a very successful period with Northampton and can cover multiple positions across the backline.”
